Beneath a chilly and bleak world covered in snow lies an undercurrent of darkness and chaos. In the approaching paradigm shift a prelude to destruction or rebirth?

The highly anticipated Sons of the Neon Night presents a cold and balanced world that Juno Mak took four years to construct and eight years to produce. It deliberately challenges conventions and sees the creation of a new world that boasts itself to be a new order, new system and more humane. The filmmaker’s unique vision of color and art, as well as the film’s innovative storytelling helped it become an official selection of the 78th Cannes Film Festival’s Midnight Screening section.

The characters of Sons of the Neon Night are entangled in complex dynamics that keep audiences guessing and debating. To let audiences sense the gravitas and dimensions of the characters, the director has enlisted Spanish sculptor Eudald de Juana Gorriz to create a series of sculptures for the film, including the five key characters — Moreton (Takeshi Kaneshiro), Wong Chi Tat (Sean Lau), Man Ki (Tony Leung Ka-fai), Ching Man Sing (Louis Koo) and Siyan (Gao Yuanyuan) — as well as the film’s mastermind — writer, producer and director Juno Mak. These sculptures use a different art form to reshape and convey their personalities, attitudes and relationships.

Born in 1988 to a family of sculptors, Eudald de Juana Gorriz grew up in an artistic and natural environment, where he developed a deep interest for art. At the age of 19, he studied Fine Arts and various artistic disciplines at the Barcelona University, using the human form as a departing point for his ideas, as well as a tool to express emotions and engage with viewers.

Upon graduation in 2012, Eudald moved to Florence, where he focused his training in academic sculpture and drawing at the Florence Academy of Art. There, he continued to pursue the representation of human figure in the naturalist style based on the tradition of 19th century French and Italian academies. Later, he became principal instructor in sculpture and drawing in The Florence Academy of Art.

Eudald’s works can also be seen in Museu d’Art Modern in Barcelona (MEAM), where they are part of the permanent collection.

The Sons of the Neon Night exhibition will give audiences a sneak peek into the familiar, yet frosty world of this highly-anticipated film.
